Phillip Soven reigns down under amidst three world class events
The WWA Wakeboard World Championships held in Maroochydore, Australia, presented by Malibu Boats, was quite a success with over 100 riders adding an exciting end to the 2005 WWA World Series. Light showers during the weekend couldn’t stop the crowds from flooding Marshall’s Lakes, which were packed with the world’s best wakeboarders and wakeskaters.
The WWA Wakeboard World Championships was in the middle of three world-class events going on in Australia in a three-week time span, including the Moto Grand Prix in Victoria, the WWA Wakeboard World Championships and the Indy 300 in Queensland. In the Moto GP Oct. 15 th, American Nicky Hayden took second, with a close finish behind Italian Valentino Rossi. In the WWA Wakeboard World Championships, Americans Phillip Soven and JD Webb took first and second, with New Zealander Jeff Weatherall in third. One weekend after the WWA Wakeboard Worlds, the 15 th annual Indy 300 kicked off on the Gold Coast. The Indy 300 drew a crowd of over 316,000 people throughout the weekend, with a track winding through Surfer’s Paradise.
This marked the first time the WWA Wakeboard World Championships was held outside of the United States and with two other world-class events taking place in the same area; it proved to be a major success. In the overall WWA Wakeboard World Series, Australian Daniel Watkins took first, Rusty Malinoski (CAN) took second, and Australians Brett Eisenhauer and Josh Sanders took the third and fourth spots.
The World Wakeboard Association would like to thank Malibu Boats, Marshall’s Lakes, Boarder Magazine, Maroochy Shire Council, Red Bull, Liquid Force, CWB, O’Brien, Smith Optics, JetPilot, New Schnitzel, Work Pac, Trojan Wake Ski Snow, WakeBoarding Magazine, Wakeboard NSW and WWA Australia for making the WWA World Wakeboard Championships possible.
